Maruti Suzuki Swift Emerges as India's Most Popular Used Car Across Metro and Non-Metro Markets
India's used car market may be divided between metropolitan and non-metropolitan buyers, but both continue to favour the Maruti Suzuki Swift. According to the Cars24 x Team-BHP Gears of Growth 2025 report, the hatchback led used car transactions nationwide, supported by strong resale value, extensive service reach and changing consumer trends.
For many consumers, the Swift serves as their first vehicle. Buyers often turn to the hatchback after deciding to move away from dependence on taxis or when maintaining an ageing family vehicle becomes uneconomical. At that stage, many consumers choose a proven and dependable option. According to transaction data covering more than 33 million users, buyers across the country continue to make the same choice.
The Cars24 x Team-BHP Gears of Growth 2025 report showed that the Maruti Suzuki Swift accounted for 4.93 percent of all used car transactions nationwide in 2025. In metropolitan markets, the model secured a 5 percent share, while in non-metropolitan markets it commanded a 4.80 percent share. No other vehicle in the rankings occupied the top position in more than one category. The Swift led all three lists.
Nationally, the Wagon R ranked second with a 3.47 percent share, almost one and a half percentage points behind the Swift. In non-metropolitan markets, the gap was even larger, with the Swift's 4.80 percent share comfortably ahead of the second-placed Swift Dzire at 3.08 percent. In a market where the entire top 10 models are separated by roughly three percentage points, the margin represented a significant advantage.
The rankings beneath the top position reflected contrasting preferences between metropolitan and non-metropolitan buyers. Metropolitan consumers placed the Honda City fourth and the Baleno fifth, vehicles associated in the report with demand for newer model years, upgrades and automatic transmissions. Buyers outside major cities ranked the Swift Dzire second and included the Alto among the top 10 models, reflecting demand for value-oriented vehicles with low running costs. Despite these differences, both markets shared the same leading choice.
The report attributed the Swift's dominance to several factors evident throughout the broader market data.
Hatchbacks remained the foundation of India's used vehicle market in 2025, accounting for 52 percent of all transactions, compared with 32 percent for sport utility vehicles and 16 percent for sedans. The report described hatchbacks as the backbone of the used car market because of their affordability and ease of use in congested urban environments. The Swift occupied the centre of this demand.
The model also matched prevailing driving habits. Manual transmissions represented 72 percent of used vehicle sales, with an even higher concentration outside metropolitan areas. Most used Swift vehicles are equipped with manual gearboxes, offer good fuel efficiency and are inexpensive to maintain, making them suitable for the largest segment of buyers.
Supply and resale value also contributed to the vehicle's popularity. Maruti Suzuki has sold the Swift in large volumes since the middle of the 2000s, while its service network extends into regions where many competing brands have limited presence. For first-time used car buyers, this creates confidence because repairs are readily available and resale remains straightforward. The report stated that the model's appeal spans different price ranges and age groups, with buyers favouring a vehicle they know can be serviced almost anywhere and sold without difficulty.
The report also cautioned against overinterpreting the figures. The data reflected Cars24 transactions drawn from more than 33 million users as of December 2025 and did not represent national vehicle registrations. Part of the Swift's leadership stems from the large number of units originally sold in the new car market. Occupying the top position does not necessarily mean it is the ideal vehicle for every consumer. The same report identified the Hyundai Creta as the only sport utility vehicle in the national top 10, indicating growing demand among buyers seeking alternatives.
The report suggested that the Swift's dominance may face increasing challenges in the future. The share of sport utility vehicles in the used car market has more than doubled since 2023, rising from 15 percent to 32 percent. As today's new sport utility vehicles enter the used market during 2027 and 2028, the long-standing dominance of hatchbacks could weaken.
For now, the conclusion remains unchanged. In a used car market increasingly divided between buyers upgrading their vehicles and first-time owners entering the market, the Maruti Suzuki Swift remains the answer both segments continue to choose.
All figures in this report are sourced from the Cars24 x Team-BHP Gears of Growth 2025 report and are based on Cars24's internal transaction data covering more than 33 million users as of December 2025. Model shares represent the proportion of total used car transactions.
